A single police officer was responsible for shooting dead four of the five terrorist who were involved in the car attack in the Spanish town of Cambrils.

Spanish media reports how the officer from the Catalonia police force Mossos d'Esquadra shot the men in the coastal town after they drove a black Audi into a crowd of people.

The men, who were wearing fake explosive vests at the time, were also armed with guns, machetes and axes. The officer, who has not been named, managed to gun down four of the terrorists single-handedly, according to La Vanguardia citing sources.

While fleeing, the fifth terrorist stabbed a member of the public before he was also shot dead by a sergeant from the Regional Operatius Resource Area (ARRO).

One woman has died from her injuries following the attack in Cambrils. Six others were injured in the attack, including a police officer who suffered a broken leg after the Audi rammed into a police vehicle.

The Cambrils attack occurred hours after another vehicle killed at least 13 people in Barcelona after ploughing into pedestrians at high speed in the popular tourist spot of Las Ramblas.

Two of the victims have been named as Italian father-of-two Bruno Gulotta, and 44-year-old Elke Vanbockrijck from the Belgian town of Tongeren.

Three people have been arrested in connection with the Las Ramblas attack, including Driss Oukabir, who handed himself into police.

Authorities are still hunting for his brother, Moussa Oukabir, who is suspected of being the driver of the van used in the terrorist attack.

Elsewhere, a minute's silence was held at Barcelona's main square, Plaza de Catalunya, in tribute to the victims. Spain's King Felipe and Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy were among those who attended the event.
