A vicious fight broke out between two passengers on a Southwest Airlines flight shortly after the plane arrived in Burbank, California.

Footage of the violence on flight 2530 was recorded and uploaded onto social media following a string of recent violent incidents on airlines. The plane had travelled from Dallas, Texas and was stopping over at Hollywood Burbank Airport before continuing on to Oakland on Sunday (7 May).

As the jet trundled to the gate, a brawl erupted between two men and grew increasingly more violent as fellow passengers tried to get off the plane at the gate, according to Southwest Airlines. It is not clear what prompted the altercation.

In the footage uploaded onto social media, the two men can be seen wrestling along the aisle as a flight attendant tries to pull them apart. The jostling moves onto another row and the woman is shoved onto the seats as the pair continue grappling.

As the two men fight, one woman can be heard yelling at them to stop it while another asks: "What is wrong with you?"

During the violence, one man can be seen unleashing a number of punches on the other.

The suspect has been identified as 37-year-old Chaze Mickalo Cable. He was arrested at the gate for assault and battery and was being held on $50,000 (£38,600) bail.

The other passenger, who has not been named, suffered a contusion to his left eye, a laceration to his nose and a chipped tooth.

Southwest Airlines paid tribute to the way in which staff members responded to the incident. "Our employees are our everyday heroes and are trained to de-escalate conflict while delivering heartfelt hospitality on nearly 4,000 flights to nearly the half-million customers who fly Southwest every day," the company said in a statement.

The footage was posted on Twitter by Nick Krause – who was not on the flight – after it was filmed by his father.
